What I learnt this week: Reach out!

I’m scared to turn on the news.  Each day seems to be worse than the last.  The thing is I can’t change anything that is happening, so it only makes me feel sad that humans can inflict so much pain on one another.  It’s downright bloody depressing.

So what to do- just give up on people?

As I pondered this question I was listening to the radio and ‘Touch’ by Noiseworks came on.  I listened to the words…

Reach out and, reach out and

Reach out and touch somebody

Reach out and, reach out and

Reach out and touch somebody

In this old world we all can see

So let’s take away the silent fears, yeah

With all of our mistakes

You think we’d stop and take a look now, yeah

And all I want to say

Is maybe that we should reach out, everybody

There was my answer.

We can’t close ourselves off from the world.  We can’t let ourselves be driven by hate.  We must reach out to others.

And this doesn’t have to be huge.  It can be through simple connections…

I was running to catch a train this week and a ticket inspector yells out- I love your dress.  Isn’t that nice?  A simple comment.  She feels good, I feel good.  Connection made.

In a world where we are increasingly ‘connected’ and yet so ‘disconnected’ these small interactions are vital.  They are what make us human.  We have to make an effort to reach out to others, be with others and care about others.

Because in dark times we must find the light.

Got to reconnect with some old friends this week :)
